French Fries. French Toast. French Tract?

The cartoon gospel tract I illustrated back in January has now been translated into French for by Living Waters Canada. You can pre-order the French version here. Also in the works are translations in Spanish and Tagalog (Philippines). Wow, super-cool!

Congrats on creating such a popular tract, Cedric. Yet, I have to admit, ever since I first saw it, I've found the message of this particular tract to be confusing. I've seen Ray Comfort use the same approach on the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and I just don't get who this type of tract is intended for. Here's my problem...

The tract approaches the audience as if the audience is already Christian. Mr. Nice Guy is the "every man" in your tract, and he is supposed to represent the audience. Yet, Mr. Nice Guy is protrayed as already believing in God and in Heaven, and is therefore already a "Christian".

The tract portrays Mr. Nice Guy as a Christian who doesn't know that he's supposed to repent and have faith in Jesus. And I have to ask, how common is that??? Is that a big problem in Christianity, that Christians aren't aware of the core belief of their own religion?

My point is....the tract seems to be "preaching to the choir". It approaches the reader as someone who is already Christian, yet then makes the arguement that the reader must have faith in Christ to reach heaven. I just don't see how this could be a very good method of conversion....since it seems to be trying to convert the already converted.

Perhaps you can eleborate on your reasons for being so into this message.....

Oh God no. Not the tract, but Ray Comfort is in my city! At least his ministry is. I thought it was bad enough that one of the churches here changed their name to Living Waters church because they like his stuff so much. Bet it is somehow tied in with them. Congrats on the translation. Excuse me while I go rend my garments.

Luke, thanks for the kind and honest feedback. Here's the issue: Just because someone believes in God and heaven does not make them a true Christian. Muslims believe in God and heaven (although not the same God). Even the Devil believes in God. Most people, even many raised in Christian churches, somehow seem to believe that if there is a heaven they are good enough to get there. But the Bible teaches the exact opposite. "Our righteous deeds are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6).

Jesus put it well: "He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 'Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:9-14)

Human pride makes us thing we are better than some people or deserving of God's forgiveness. But the truth is we need a Saviour precisely because we are so guilty, rebellious and unworthy. It is only because of God's great kindness that God forgives the humble and repentant sinner, not becuase the sinner deserves it.

one of freedom, I'm very curious. What offends you so much about Ray Comfort's ministry?

I can't seem to find where you answered Cedric. I looked on your Freedom Log, and don't see anything about Cedric's tract. Perhaps you can direct me to it?
